-- Iran FM: Azerbaijan Embassy attack not terror operation

Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said Iran’s intelligence and security organizations believe the Friday armed attack on the Azeri Embassy in Tehran was not a “terrorist and organized operation”, but rather carried out with personal motives. Amir-Abdollahian made the remarks in an address to a joint press conference with Azerbaijani Ambassador to Tehran Ali Alizadeh after visiting the Azerbaijani nationals at the hospital on Friday, Tasnim News Agency reported.

On Friday morning, a gunman stormed the Azeri Embassy and started shooting with a firearm, killing a security official and injuring two others. The assailant was arrested by Iranian security forces.

-- Parliament warns of ‘shocking, stinging’ response to Europe’s anti-Tehran bids

The Iranian Parliament’s deputy speaker warned of shocking and awakening response to European countries if they insist on pursuing hostile and aggressive policies against Tehran and fail to rectify their approach vis-à-vis the Islamic Republic.

“Over the past few months, the enemies of the Iranian nation have resorted to hybrid warfare to distort realities in the Islamic Republic. Now that they have miserably failed to achieve their objective, they are trying to exert pressure on Iran at the international level through various political scenarios,” Ali Nikzad said on Sunday.

-- MP: Iran Parliament drafts plan to retaliate Europe’s ‘meddlesome’ behavior 

Iranian lawmakers are strongly after retaliating Europe’s interventionist behaviors harshly and to this end, have prepared a double-urgency plan, an MP said on Saturday. Chairman of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Vahid Jalalzadeh made the remarks in an interview with IRNA, noting that the bill aims to impose sanctions on the armies of the European Union member states as a reprisal for their “meddlesome” behaviors, by which he was referring to the European Parliament’s resolution to blacklist the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) a “terror organization” and a potential decision by the EU to follow the EP’s suit.

-- Iranian Documentary Awarded in France

Iranian documentary ‘Silent House’ has won an award at the Festival International de Programmes FIPOADOC in France. The documentary directed by Farnaz Jourabchinan grabbed the MITRANI award at this year’s edition of the event.
Produced by Elaheh Nobakht, ‘Silent House’ tells the story of a family in Tehran during decades. The film is a coproduction of Iran, Canada, France, Philippine and Qatar.

-- Iran-Russia Launch SWIFT-Like System

 Deputy CBI governor for International Affairs in the Central Bank of Iran (CBI) Mohsen Karimi said Sunday that country and Russia signed an MoU to connect their banking messaging systems through which financial and banking exchanges will be facilitated.

“The memorandum of understanding on connecting and financial messengers between Iran and Russia was signed, and financial and banking exchanges between the two countries and 13 other countries that are present in Russia were facilitated,” Karimi said at the signing ceremony of the MoU between Iran and Russia in Tehran on Sunday afternoon.

-- Iran Freestyle Wrestler Gets Bronze at Ivan Yarygin Cup

Iran’s freestyle wrestler Mostafa Toghani has received a bronze medal in the weight category of 125kg at Ivan Yarygin Cup held in Russia.Toghani ranked third at the sporting competition which was held in honor of the two-time Olympic Champion.
The tournament was held in Krasnoyarsk from January 26-28. Ivan Sergeyevich Yarygin -the two-time Olympic Champion- was a Soviet and Russian heavyweight freestyle wrestler.

-- Azerbaijan withdraws staff from Tehran embassy

Azerbaijan was to withdraw embassy personnel and family members from Iran on Sunday, according to Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry. The decision followed two days after a gunman stormed the embassy and killed a security officer and injured two others.  

Iranian officials denounced the attack on Friday and declared the gunman had a personal, not a political, purpose. Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian suggested that foes should not be permitted to exploit the situation.

-- Iranian photojournalist Mehdi Bolurian on Andrei Stenin Press Photo Contest jury

Iranian photojournalist Mehdi Bolurian has been selected for the jury of the Andrei Stenin International Press Photo Contest.In a statement published last week by the organizers, Bolurian expressed his happiness over joining the jury of the Russian contest for photojournalists aged between 18 and 33.

The photographer who works for the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) said that the 2023 contest would be different from previous editions and hoped to see a new world in this year’s pictures after the end of the COVID-19 pandemic.

-- Iran among world’s top 5 turbine manufacturers

Deputy Head of Iran Powerplant Repairs Company has said the country is currently among the world’s top manufacturers of steam and gas turbines, IRIB reported. “Currently, there are less than 10 major turbine manufacturing companies in the world, including GI, Siemens, and Mapna that manufacture gas and steam turbines,” Mohammad Gharaei said on Sunday.

The official noted that Iran is also among the world’s leading countries in terms of repairing and overhauling turbines. “We have carried out many international projects and we are negotiating with Russia, Iraq, Turkey, and Syria to collaborate in new important projects,” Gharaei said.
